If someone has a severe allergic reaction, chest pain, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, signs of stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty), or any medical emergency: call 999 or 112 immediately and go to your nearest A&E. Natural remedies cannot manage emergencies.

Natural does not mean safe. Many herbs and supplements that are freely available in Irish health stores have genuine pharmacological activity โ and that means they can interact with prescribed medications, affect medical conditions and cause harm in the wrong circumstances. This page covers the most important interactions and the groups who need to be most careful.
These are not rare or theoretical โ they are documented, clinically significant interactions reported in medical literature and by the MHRA, EMA and Irish Medicines Board.

Always tell your GP and pharmacist about every supplement and herbal product you use โ including those from health stores. Herb-drug interactions are real, and your healthcare team cannot protect you from them if they don't know what you're taking. Keep a written list of everything you take, including supplements, and bring it to appointments.
This is the group where caution is most important. Pregnancy changes how everything is metabolised, many herbs have uterine-stimulating properties, and the foetus is extremely vulnerable to compounds that may be harmless to adults. As a general rule:
Natural remedies have a place as supportive measures for minor, self-limiting conditions. They are not appropriate substitutes for medical care in these situations:
Not all natural remedy evidence is equal. When reading any claim about a natural remedy โ on this site or elsewhere โ here is how to assess the quality of evidence behind it:
| Evidence Type | What it means | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Cochrane systematic review | The gold standard โ independent review of all available trials with strict quality criteria | โ โ โ โ โ Highest |
| Meta-analysis of RCTs | Statistical pooling of multiple randomised controlled trials | โ โ โ โ Very high |
| Randomised controlled trial (RCT) | Randomly assigned groups, blinded where possible, controls used | โ โ โ High |
| Cohort study / epidemiological study | Large population followed over time โ shows associations, not causation | โ โ Moderate |
| In vitro / animal study | Lab or animal findings โ establishes plausibility but often doesn't translate to humans | โ Limited |
| Case report / anecdote / testimonial | Individual experiences โ useful for hypothesis-generating, not for efficacy claims | โ ๏ธ Not evidence of effectiveness |
On this site, we state our evidence source and quality for every claim. If a page only cites testimonials or in vitro studies for a health claim, treat that claim as unproven. We do not accept advertising or payment for coverage, and we have no commercial stake in any specific product line.
If you experience an adverse reaction to a natural health product in Ireland, you can report it to the HPRA (Health Products Regulatory Authority) via their website at hpra.ie. Reporting adverse reactions to herbal products helps build the safety evidence base โ please do so if you experience a concerning reaction.
